My POV on Nigerian Electoral Process
For Nigeria's electoral process to be **free, fair, credible, and truly reflect the will of the people**, several key reforms and improvements are necessary:
1. **An Independent and Efficient INEC**
* Ensure the electoral commission is truly independent from political interference.
* Appoint competent, non-partisan officials based on merit.
* Provide adequate funding and resources well before elections.
2. **Continuous and Accessible Voter Registration**
* Make voter registration available year-round.
* Increase the number of registration and PVC collection centers.
* Ensure every eligible voter can easily register, update their details, and collect their Permanent Voter Card (PVC).
3. **Reliable Election Technology**
* Use secure biometric accreditation systems to prevent multiple voting.
* Ensure electronic transmission of results from polling units works effectively nationwide.
* Publish polling unit results in real time for public verification.
4. **Transparent Result Management**
* Display results publicly at every polling unit immediately after counting.
* Make polling unit results easily accessible online.
* Ensure collation at ward, local government, and state levels is transparent and open to party agents and observers.
5. **Strong Security Without Intimidation**
* Deploy security personnel to protect voters, election officials, and materials.
* Prevent the use of security agencies to intimidate voters or favor any political party.
* Swiftly arrest and prosecute anyone involved in electoral violence.
6. **Strict Enforcement of Electoral Laws**
* Prosecute vote buyers, vote sellers, ballot snatchers, and election offenders.
* Establish a dedicated Electoral Offences Commission to investigate and prosecute electoral crimes.
7. **Internal Democracy Within Political Parties**
* Ensure parties conduct transparent primaries.
* Reduce the influence of godfatherism and money politics.
* Allow party members to choose candidates democratically.
8. **Voter Education**
* Educate citizens on their voting rights and responsibilities.
* Encourage peaceful participation and discourage vote selling.
* Increase awareness of the importance of every vote.
9. **Judicial Reforms**
* Resolve election disputes promptly.
* Ensure courts remain independent and impartial.
* Discourage unnecessary delays in election petitions.
10. **Campaign Finance Transparency**
* Enforce spending limits.
* Require political parties and candidates to disclose campaign funding.
* Prevent the use of public funds for political campaigns.
11. **Inclusive Participation**
* Make voting accessible for persons with disabilities.
* Encourage greater participation by women and young people.
* Consider mechanisms to enable Nigerians in the diaspora to vote, if supported by law.
12. **Greater Accountability**
* Political parties, candidates, INEC, security agencies, civil society organizations, and the media should all be held accountable for their roles in the electoral process.
Ultimately, **a free and fair election is not just about election day**. It depends on the integrity of the entire process—from voter registration and candidate selection to voting, result collation, dispute resolution, and enforcement of electoral laws. When institutions are independent, laws are enforced equally, and citizens can vote without fear or manipulation, election outcomes are far more likely to reflect the true will of the Nigerian people.
