🚨 NIGERIA IS DROWNING. AND WE ARE STILL TALKING ABOUT "FUTURE THREATS.
Every rainy season is a reminder: climate change is not coming. It is here.
💧 THE FLOODS
In 2024, floods hit 34 of Nigeria’s 36 states. Not a typo thirty-four.
- 3 million people impacted.
- 700 lives lost.
- 896,000 people displaced.
- 226,000 homes destroyed.
- 1.3 million hectares of farmland flooded right in the middle of harvest.
- 1 billion in crop losses (maize, sorghum, rice) enough food to feed 13 million people. Gone.
In 2025, it got worse. Borno. Adamawa. Yola. Okrika. Mokwa. Ese-Odo. Iwo. The list keeps growing.
🌊 THE OCEAN IS EATING OUR COAST
From Lagos to Bayelsa, the Atlantic is swallowing communities whole.
- Bonny Island has lost over 2 km² of land since 2000 that’s 50.75% of its shoreline.
- Along the Niger Delta, 78% of coastal transects are actively eroding. Some areas are retreating at 20–35 meters per year.
- Entire villages are disappearing. Families are watching their ancestral lands vanish into the sea.
🌵 THE NORTH IS BURNING
Farmers in the North battle prolonged drought then watch torrential rains wash away whatever survives months later.
- Desertification is marching southward.
- Arable land is shrinking.
- Food insecurity is rising.
🔥 THE HEAT IS KILLING US QUIETLY
Heatwaves are no longer "uncomfortable weather." They are a public health crisis.
- Temperatures are hitting 40°C to 42°C in Kebbi, Jalingo, Yola, Lafia, Minna, and Makurdi.
- But here is the cruel twist: the national grid collapsed 12 times in 2025. In 2026, it collapsed twice in just four days in January alone.
- So when the heat is most unbearable, Nigerians cannot even turn on a fan. No AC. No relief. Just heat, darkness, and suffering.
This is not a "future threat." This is TODAY.
Kogi. Niger. Bayelsa. Benue. Lagos. Borno. Adamawa. Kwara. Ondo. Osun. No state is safe.
The floods drown us.
The ocean eats us.
The desert creeps toward us.
The heat suffocates us and the lights go out.
How many more lives? How many more homes? How many more harvests must be washed away before we treat this like the emergency it is?
Climate change is not abstract. It is the water in your living room. It is the farm you can no longer plant. It is the child who cannot sleep because it is 42°C and there is no power.
We need action. Not promises. Not reports. ACTION.
