THE STAR PORTFOLIO
If you've been preparing for your NHS interview by memorising answers — I need you to stop.
Not because preparation is wrong. Because memorisation is the wrong kind of preparation, and a panel can usually tell within thirty seconds. A memorised answer sounds rehearsed and flat, and the moment a follow-up question doesn't match your script, the wheels come off.
What works instead is building a STAR Portfolio: five master stories, drawn entirely from your own real clinical experience, each one structured with a clear Situation, a defined Task, strong "I-led" Actions, and a quantified Result.
The key is that each story is built to flex. A single, rich story about a deteriorating patient at 2AM can answer your ABCDE question, your escalation question, your teamwork question, and your patient safety question — because it genuinely contains all of that detail already. A story about an audit you led can answer your quality improvement question, your leadership question, and your service improvement question.
Five stories, built properly, can cover the overwhelming majority of what a panel asks. You walk in not hoping you guessed the right questions, but knowing you have a real story that genuinely fits whatever comes up.
That's Day 2 complete. Five frameworks today — the "I" vs "we" distinction, quantified results, the difficult colleague structure, the Duty of Candour narrative, and the STAR Portfolio itself.
Tomorrow, Day 3: leadership questions and values-based interview stations — what separates a Band 5 answer from a Band 6 one.
