Abia State has continued to attract the attention of global investors as His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, welcomed a delegation from Utopia, a leading Egyptian pharmaceutical company, over plans to establish a drug manufacturing plant in the State.
The delegation, led by Eze Apostle Gift Chibuzor Chinyere, who facilitated the investment mission, and the Chairman of Utopia, Dr. Kamel Mohamed, met with the Governor , where discussions centred on developing Abia into a pharmaceutical production and distribution centre for Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
Governor Otti described the proposal as the kind of investment that creates real economic value through local production, employment opportunities, technology acquisition and industrial expansion.
The Governor assured the investors of his administration's full cooperation, stressing that Abia is prepared to provide every necessary support to ensure the project succeeds. He advised the company to consider the Ukwa or Osisioma axis for the proposed factory, citing the availability of gas infrastructure, reliable electricity from Geometric Power and suitable land for industrial development.
The Governor also directed the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, to work closely with the investors and fast-track all engagements required to bring the project to reality, while expressing confidence that the manufacturing facility would strengthen the State's economy and position Abia as a major pharmaceutical production destination.
Earlier, Eze Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere explained that he introduced the investors to Abia because of Governor Otti's commitment to healthcare development, adding that the company would also conduct a pilot presentation of its anti-malaria products in the State.
In his remarks, Dr. Kamel Mohamed disclosed that Utopia intends to establish a modern pharmaceutical production plant in collaboration with the Abia State Government, noting that the company already operates successful projects in Tanzania and other countries. He also referred to the existing Memorandum of Understanding between Egypt and NAFDAC on drug registration and expressed optimism that Abia would become a strategic hub for advanced pharmaceutical technology in Nigeria.
Present at the meeting were Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, Chief Executive Officer of the Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Odochi Azubuike, Chief Medical Director of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, alongside other senior government officials.
