"WHY THIS TRUST?"

"I've always wanted to work in the UK."

I hear this every week from internationally trained clinicians preparing for NHS interviews. And every week I tell them the same thing: that answer will cost you the job.

Not because it's dishonest. Because the panel isn't asking why you want to work in the UK. They're asking why this Trust, this ward, this department — and whether you've actually done the work to find out.

"Why this Trust?" is a research filter, and the research is not optional.

What I coach every client to do before any NHS interview:
→ Read the Trust's most recent CQC inspection report
→ Identify their Outstanding ratings, and understand what earned them
→ Identify their Requires Improvement areas, and come ready to say how your experience could help close that gap
→ Know their strategic priorities and their Foundation Trust status

Then when the panel asks "why us," you don't talk about the UK. You say something like: "I reviewed your most recent CQC report and noted the Outstanding rating for your Emergency Department's patient responsiveness. I also saw the Requires Improvement finding on community nursing documentation — having implemented a structured documentation audit before, I believe I can contribute directly there."

That answer scores. Every time.
