So Abacha died in active service to Kpekus?
We are just trying to uncover the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of physiotherapist/nurse/CHEW Mary Habila in a private residence of a public official, a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and then, boom, another revelation of a death that we all thought was from eating an apple. Ok, I am trying to understand what Al-Musty did there by calling it "an apple", as we all allegedly thought it was in the beginning at the Garden of Eden.
The recent story surrounding General Sani Abacha's final moments has once again sparked conversations across Nigeria. While the claims come from a retired DSS officer's memoir and should be understood in that context, the account of the incident has reminded many people of an enduring truth: a leader's private life is never entirely private.
Power does not exempt anyone from moral responsibility. In fact, it raises the standard. The higher the office, the greater the expectation of discipline, integrity, and self-control. A person's character behind closed doors often shapes the decisions they make in public.
History teaches us that many great leaders were not brought down by a lack of intelligence or competence but by unchecked appetites, poor judgement about how they satisfy their orgies, and the belief that power placed them above accountability. Leadership is not just about commanding authority; it is about mastering oneself about morality and accountability.
For those who hold public office today, this should be a sobering reminder. Titles fade. Power changes hands. What remains is the legacy of how a leader lived, the values they upheld, and the example they left behind.
Character is not an optional qualification for leadership. It is the foundation upon which lasting leadership is built. When you, as a leader, live your private life, ask yourself if you will be proud of it when it comes public. Note: When you take public office, be sure that no matter how private your life is, one day it will be made public because you will be a subject of public scrutiny even in death.
Now we know what and how Abacha died.
We want to know how Mary Habila died in the private residence of Dave Umahi.
