THE SAFETY FILTER

There's one question in almost every NHS Band 5, 6 and 7 interview that acts as a hard filter.

Get it right, and the rest of the interview opens up. Get it wrong, and nothing else you said matters as much.

It's the deteriorating patient scenario.

You know the clinical content. That was never the issue. What trips experienced clinicians up — including ones with years of ICU experience — is answering it clinically instead of structurally.

What the panel is listening for:
→ ABCDE — Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure — verbalised, in order
→ NEWS2, the NHS's National Early Warning Score, as your recognition tool
→ A clear SBAR escalation
→ An understanding of the escalation chain, and the judgement to use it without delay

This question isn't really testing clinical knowledge. It's testing safety culture — whether you'd escalate promptly rather than sit on your own uncertainty.

The structure is the answer.
