Extending the presidential term limit in Nigeria would only satisfy political greed. Four years is enough time for a president to demonstrate leadership, implement policies, and deliver measurable results. If a president performs well during the first term, the people can judge that performance at the ballot box and, where the constitution allows, reward it with a second term.

The real issue is not the length of a term but how effectively that time is used. Good governance depends on competence, accountability, and strong institutions—not longer stays in office. Extending term limits risks weakening democratic accountability, encouraging the concentration of power, and reducing opportunities for new leadership.

Leaders should focus on making the most of the time they were elected to serve, rather than seeking to change the rules to remain in office. Democracy is strengthened when power changes hands through free and fair elections, not when constitutional limits are extended to benefit those already in power. @arisetv
