Iyabo Obasanjo Distances Self from PDP Presidential Campaign, Focuses on Ogun.

Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has declared that she does not recognise any presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general election, insisting that her political attention is firmly fixed on Ogun State rather than the party's national campaign.

Speaking during an interview, Obasanjo, who is the PDP's senatorial candidate for Ogun Central, said she was unaware of the party's emergence of Senator Sandy Onor as its consensus presidential candidate. She maintained that she could not campaign for a candidate she neither knew nor was formally introduced to by the party.

"To my knowledge, there is no PDP presidential candidate. If it's the one you mentioned, I don't know him. There's no reason for me to tell people to vote for him because at that meeting they did not actually tell us anything of the sort," she said.

The former senator stressed that her campaign was centred on Ogun State and not the national presidential race. She also disclosed that she had received no communication from the PDP national leadership regarding any planned visit by the party's presidential candidate to the state, adding that she did not expect to participate in such a campaign.

Obasanjo, who recently returned to the PDP after leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC), also commented on the internal dynamics of political parties, describing efforts to attract members from rival parties as a normal aspect of politics.

She, however, emphasised the need for reconciliation after party primaries, arguing that aggrieved members should be made to feel valued and included.

Her remarks are expected to fuel fresh discussions about cohesion within the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly as opposition parties continue to position themselves for the presidential contest.

The comments also underscore the growing importance of state-level political calculations, with some candidates prioritising local electoral battles over national campaign activities.
