One pattern I have consistently observed is that people's responses to almost anything are, to some degree, a projection of themselves their experiences, beliefs, values, fears, strengths, and limitations. Whether those projections are positive or negative is often subjective. People can only interpret the world from the perspective they possess, and sometimes they simply do not know what they do not know.
The mistake, however, is to assume that every opinion is either completely right or completely wrong. Some opinions are projections; others reveal truths about us that we may not yet see. Wisdom is knowing the difference.
That is why I believe we should never be quick to dismiss people's opinions, nor should we be quick to surrender to them. We should listen carefully, weigh them honestly, and respect the perspective from which they come. Some will expose our blind spots, challenge our assumptions, and help us grow. Others will simply reflect the worldview of the person expressing them.
The greater tragedy is allowing either praise or criticism to become the foundation of our identity. If our sense of self rises and falls with other people's validation, we become prisoners of perspectives we do not control.
Instead, let your convictions be formed through truth, wisdom, humility, and honest self-examination. Be willing to learn, willing to be corrected, and willing to change when the evidence demands it. But don't allow your identity to be determined by the projections of others.
Listen to every voice. Learn from the wise. Test every opinion. Hold on to what is true. Let your convictions be anchored in objective truth not in the changing validations or projections of those around you.
