NBA Election Sparks Debate Over Voter Participation
Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, the first runner-up in the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential election, has questioned the credibility of the poll, arguing that the outcome did not reflect the wishes of the majority of NBA members.
According to Akangbe, out of approximately 82,000 eligible members, only about 25,000 were able to vote, leaving a significant number of lawyers unable to participate due to reported voting challenges.
He stated:
“Out of 82,000 members, only 25,000 voted, and that was a massive disenfranchisement because more members wanted to vote but couldn’t. If I were the winner, I would be calling for a rerun.”
His remarks have reignited discussions about voter access, transparency, and the integrity of professional association elections in Nigeria.
What do you think? Should an election with such a low voter turnout be accepted, or should there be a rerun?
