If salvation is by works, then Christ died for nothing. His death was necessary because our works could never save us.

The Bible says that our own righteousness is like filthy rags before God (Isaiah 64:6). If our righteousness is filthy before Him, how can that same righteousness qualify us for heaven?

This is exactly the point Paul makes:

Galatians 2:21 – “I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing.”

And again:

Ephesians 2:8–9 – “For by grace you have been saved through faith… and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.”

The righteousness that qualifies a believer for heaven is not self produced, it is the righteousness of Christ imputed to everyone who believes. We are not saved because we are righteous. We are declared righteous because we have trusted in Christ.
