Abacha died of cardiac arrest during intercourse, ex-DSS operative

A former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services, Dennis Amachree, has offered a fresh account of the death of former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, asserting that the late leader died after suffering a cardiac arrest during a private encounter at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The claim is contained in Amachree's memoir, DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield, where he recounts his experiences in the intelligence service and revisits one of Nigeria's most controversial political events.

According to Amachree, who was serving as Assistant Director of Operations and Intelligence at the DSS Lagos Command when Abacha died in June 1998, the former military ruler became unresponsive in the early hours of the morning while alone with a woman who had visited the Presidential Villa.

He alleged that the woman had arrived at Aso Rock with her elder sister, who was known to the late Head of State.

After spending some time at the residence, the elder sister reportedly departed, leaving the younger woman behind with Abacha.

Amachree stated that the woman became alarmed when she discovered the military ruler was no longer responding.

He claimed she quietly left the villa after asking security personnel to arrange transportation back to her hotel and later travelled to Lagos on the first available morning flight.

He further disclosed that once Abacha's condition became known, security officials launched efforts to trace the woman.

According to him, he was instructed by the DSS headquarters to locate and question her in Lagos before she was returned to Abuja for further investigation.

The retired intelligence officer maintained that her explanation of the incident pointed to a fatal cardiac arrest rather than any form of poisoning.

He argued that the account contradicts the conspiracy theories that have surrounded Abacha's sudden death for nearly three decades.

Abacha governed Nigeria from November 1993 until his death on June 8, 1998.

His passing has remained one of the country's most debated historical events, with different versions of what happened continuing to surface over the years.
