Joseph-Louis Lagrange (1736–1813) was an Italian-born French mathematician and astronomer whose work laid the foundations for much of modern mathematical physics and optimization.

A towering figure of the Enlightenment, he revolutionized mechanics through his masterpiece Mécanique Analytique, reformulating Newtonian mechanics into the elegant framework now known as Lagrangian mechanics, which remains central to classical mechanics, quantum physics, and relativity.

He also pioneered the calculus of variations, introduced the method of Lagrange multipliers for constrained optimization, and made lasting contributions to number theory, differential equations, celestial mechanics, and algebra.

Renowned for his analytical precision and elegant mathematical style, Lagrange transformed complex physical problems into powerful general principles, leaving a legacy that continues to influence mathematics, engineering, economics, and the physical sciences.
