The issues reported during the NBA election should concern everyone who believes in credible elections. Once widespread technical failures begin preventing or affecting voting, the integrity of the process is immediately called into question. In such circumstances, declaring a winner should not be the default response. The election should be suspended, the issues independently investigated and resolved, and a fresh election conducted.
More importantly, every electronic election—whether for the NBA, professional bodies, political parties, or national elections—should have a full-scale mock election before the actual voting day. We don't wait until election day to discover that servers can't cope with traffic or that the platform has critical flaws. These are problems that proper testing should expose and fix beforehand.
Technology is meant to strengthen confidence in elections, not weaken it. We must stop treating "technical glitches" as an acceptable excuse after the fact. Credibility must always come before convenience.
