What Is Malaria?

Malaria is a serious but preventable disease caused by tiny parasites called Plasmodium. It is spread to humans through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. It is not caused by dirty water, bad weather, or eating certain foods.

Once the parasite enters the body, it travels to the liver, multiplies, and then infects the red blood cells. This leads to symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, body aches, weakness, and sometimes vomiting. If left untreated, malaria can become severe and may even be life-threatening.

Malaria is common in many tropical countries, including Nigeria, but the good news is that it can be prevented. Sleeping under insecticide-treated mosquito nets, keeping your surroundings clean, eliminating stagnant water, and seeking prompt treatment when symptoms appear can greatly reduce the risk.

Understanding what malaria is is the first step toward protecting yourself, your family, and your community. Early diagnosis and proper treatment save lives.
