Most people know Wall Street as the heart of global finance, but its name comes from a real wooden wall built by Dutch settlers in the 1600s. The wall was meant to protect the colony of New Amsterdam from attacks. Although the wall disappeared centuries ago, the street evolved into the world's financial powerhouse. Every trading day, billions of dollars change hands where a simple defensive barrier once stood.
