Inspiring Mathematicians 41: Leonhard Euler

Leonhard Euler (1707–1783) was a Swiss mathematician and physicist widely regarded as one of the greatest and most prolific mathematicians in history.

His work transformed nearly every branch of mathematics, including calculus, number theory, graph theory, topology, mechanics, and mathematical physics.

Euler introduced much of the mathematical notation still used today, such as f(x) for functions, e for the base of natural logarithms, π for pi, and i for the imaginary unit.

Among his many achievements are the famous Euler's identity, Euler's formula for polyhedra, and the solution to the Königsberg bridge problem, which laid the foundations of graph theory.

Remarkably, despite becoming almost completely blind in his later years, Euler continued producing groundbreaking research through dictation, leaving behind more than 850 publications that continue to influence mathematics and science centuries after his death.
