2027: Obi, Atiku lack northern structure to defeat Tinubu – Ganduje

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi lack the political structure and grassroots support in Northern Nigeria needed to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking at a public event in Kano, Ganduje described the North as the decisive region in Nigeria's presidential elections, insisting that neither Atiku nor Obi possesses the political machinery required to secure victory across the region. He maintained that despite ongoing opposition coalition talks, both politicians remain weak in the North.

According to him, the opposition's efforts to realign ahead of the 2027 polls would not significantly alter the political landscape, stressing that the APC remains firmly rooted across the northern states.

Ganduje also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strengthen the requirements for political party registration, arguing that only parties with functional structures, clear ideologies and broad national presence should be allowed to participate in elections.

He said stricter registration standards would strengthen Nigeria's democracy by ensuring that only viable political parties contest elections, adding that the comments come amid increased consultations among opposition leaders seeking to challenge President Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027.
