Senegal’s President elected new ECOWAS chairman.

The President of Senegal has been elected as the new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at the bloc's 69th Ordinary Summit held in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The election was announced on Sunday after West African leaders unanimously selected the Senegalese leader to steer the affairs of the regional organisation. He succeeds the immediate past chairman, who oversaw the bloc during a period marked by political transitions, security challenges and efforts to strengthen regional economic integration.

The development was confirmed in a brief statement by the spokesperson for Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa. Nigeria was represented at the summit by Vice President Kashim Shettima on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.

As the new chairman, the Senegalese president is expected to lead efforts aimed at promoting peace and security, deepening economic cooperation, strengthening democratic governance and addressing the region's growing security and humanitarian challenges.

The summit also focused on key policy decisions and strategic resolutions designed to advance regional integration, boost trade and sustainable development, while reaffirming the commitment of member states to collective peace, stability and prosperity across West Africa.

Further details on the chairman's tenure, the official handover and other resolutions adopted at the summit are expected to be released by ECOWAS.
