A Victory Beyond Ethnicity: Merit, Inclusion, and the Rule of Law Must Prevail

The election of Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, who secured 12,317 votes (47.18%) in the Nigerian Bar Association presidential election, is a welcome affirmation of merit and gender inclusion, and a rejection of the notion that ethnic considerations must determine leadership choices.

While she was widely regarded as a strong contender, given the significant voting strength of lawyers in the public sector, her victory also reflects a well-organized campaign and effective public positioning. Credit is also due to her campaign team, including the strategic communications support widely associated with her husband, a public relations consultant.

Congratulations, Madam President.

As you assume office, I hope the NBA will focus less on internal politics and more on its core constitutional responsibilities: defending the rule of law, safeguarding the independence of the legal profession, and standing firmly for justice and the protection of citizens’ rights.

Congratulations once again, and best wishes for a successful tenure.
