Trump Wants United States to Host Future FIFA World Cup Alone

United States President Donald Trump has called on FIFA to award a future men's FIFA World Cup exclusively to the United States, urging football's governing body to move away from the joint-hosting model used for the 2026 tournament.

Trump made the remarks during a FIFA World Cup reception at Trump Tower in New York ahead of Sunday's World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.

Addressing FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the US leader praised the success of the 2026 tournament, which is being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, before suggesting that America should host a future edition on its own.

"You should choose the United States of America again. This time we will leave Canada and Mexico out," Trump said.

He added that FIFA could award the next available tournament to another country before returning the competition to the United States as a sole host.

"Pick somebody else for the next one, and that will take some of the anger, hatred and steam out of everyone," he said.

Trump also revealed that Infantino had floated the idea of a future World Cup jointly hosted by the United States and China.

"But Gianni also had another idea. He said we could do China and the United States, so you have a nice short flight between games. The players would love that," Trump added.

The next men's FIFA World Cup open for bidding is the 2038 edition, as FIFA has already awarded the 2030 World Cup to Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with the opening matches scheduled to be played in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay to mark the tournament's centenary. Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

The United States is currently co-hosting the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, marking the first time in history that the men's tournament has been staged across three countries.

Trump's comments come as attention turns to the 2026 World Cup final, where Argentina and Spain will battle for football's biggest prize, while discussions over future hosts continue to gather momentum.
