Police Arrest Suspected Armed Robber, Recover Stolen Motorcycle in Ibadan.
Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command have arrested a suspected armed robber accused of targeting commercial motorcyclists and recovered a motorcycle allegedly stolen during a violent attack in Ibadan.
The suspect, identified as Shafiu Nuhu, was apprehended by officers of the Command's Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) on July 16, shortly after he allegedly attacked a commercial motorcyclist in the Apata area of the Oyo State capital.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the command acted on credible intelligence from a concerned resident who reported that the victim, Muhammadu Kamilu, had been assaulted along Adeniji Estate, Apata.
Police said the suspect allegedly struck the motorcyclist with an iron hammer before fleeing with his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle bearing registration number AJW 842 QU.
Acting swiftly on the information, VCRU operatives tracked down and arrested the suspect. During the operation, officers recovered the stolen motorcycle as well as the iron hammer allegedly used to attack the victim.
The incident also left a good Samaritan, Nathaniel Ibrahim, injured after he intervened to help the victim during the robbery. Both men sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
According to the police spokesperson, the suspect reportedly confessed during interrogation to operating as a lone armed robber who specialised in dispossessing commercial motorcyclists of their motorcycles across Ibadan and surrounding communities.
The police said investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspect is connected to other similar robbery incidents within the state.
Commending the efforts of the responding officers, Commissioner of Police Abimbola Olugbenga praised the bravery of the bystander and the vigilance of members of the public, noting that timely information from residents played a crucial role in the suspect's arrest.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to tackling violent crime across Oyo State and urged residents to continue providing useful information that would assist law enforcement agencies in combating criminal activities.
