OPEN HEAVENS DEVOTIONAL 19 JULY 2026 COMMENTARY
MEMORISE: Proverbs 4:18
“But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.”
This verse describes the believer’s journey as one of progressive brightness.
BIBLE READING: Luke 5:1-7
This passage records the miraculous catch of fish after a night of fruitless labor. Simon Peter and his companions had toiled all night and caught nothing. Jesus told Peter to launch out into the deep and let down his nets for a catch. Peter responded, “Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.” When they did, they caught such a great multitude of fish that their net broke, and they had to signal their partners in the other ship to come help. Both ships were filled so full that they began to sink.
The Frustration of Toiling Without Results
1. Peter’s Night of Emptiness
“In today’s Bible reading, Peter fished all night but caught nothing. He must have been frustrated, and I can relate to how he must have felt because I love to fish. I often go fishing to relax, and sometimes, within five minutes of throwing my hook in the water, I make a catch. On other occasions, however, I might spend an hour without catching any fish.”
Peter’s Effort Peter’s Result
Fished all night Caught nothing
Experienced, professional fisherman Empty nets
Worked hard No reward for his labor
“Peter’s efforts that night were in vain, not because he wasn’t working hard, but because things just weren’t working out for him.”
This is the experience of many people in their careers and academics. They are not lazy. They are not unqualified. They work hard, study long, put in the hours, but the results do not come. Promotions are denied. Opportunities pass them by. They toil all night and catch nothing.
What Is Not the Problem What May Be the Problem
Lack of effort Spiritual opposition
Lack of qualification Burdens of stagnation
Laziness or carelessness The devil blocking their path
The Professor and His Former Student
“When I was still a lecturer at the University of Lagos, an advertisement was made for a position at a company, and a professor applied. He was invited for an interview, and on getting to the venue of the interview, he found out that the chairman of the panel of interviewers was his former student who had graduated recently. When the professor saw him, he said, ‘I am sorry. I have come to the wrong room.’ However, the young man told him that he was in the right room. The professor felt ashamed because he was definitely not where he was meant to be in his career.”
The Professor’s Situation The Irony
A professor (high academic rank) Interviewing for a position under a recent graduate
Should have been ahead in his career Found himself behind someone he once taught
Felt ashamed Recognized he was not where he should be
This professor was not lazy. He had credentials. He had experience. But something had gone wrong. He was stagnant while his former student advanced.
“Some people fail in their careers and academics not because they are lazy, but because they are carrying heavy burdens of opposition from the devil that prevent them from being successful.”
The Burden of Opposition How It Manifests
Demonic hindrance Doors that should open remain closed
Spiritual stagnation Promotions that should come do not happen
Unseen barriers Others advance while you remain stuck
“Such people will not be able to succeed despite their best efforts. However, when Jesus, the Burden Bearer, steps into their lives, their situations will turn around for good.”
The Young Man Opposed by His Boss
1. The Stagnation
“A young man once came to me for prayers. He told me that his boss always opposed him because of his Christian faith. The boss went as far as saying that he would never get promoted as long as he was his boss. Due to that, the young man remained stagnant in the company.”
The Young Man’s Situation The Source of Opposition
Faithful Christian His boss opposed him because of his faith
Deserving of promotion Denied promotion because of the boss’s hostility
Stagnant, stuck The boss declared: “You will never get promoted as long as I am your boss”
This was not a matter of performance. It was a matter of spiritual opposition manifesting through a human agent. The boss had made a declaration, and that declaration was blocking the young man’s progress.
2. The Decree of Deliverance
“I prayed with him and decreed in the name of Jesus that every mountain that was blocking his way should be removed.”
“Shortly after, his boss was transferred to another location, and the young man was promoted. After a while, the boss was moved back, but by then, the young man had already been promoted to the same level as his former boss.”
What Happened The Result
Daddy Adeboye decreed the removal of every mountain The boss was transferred
The young man was promoted He moved up
The boss
