At the age of 20, Palmer Luckey started Oculus VR and before he could turn 22, he sold the company to Mark Zuckerberg for $2 billion.
He was given $400 million in cash and 23.1 million worth of Facebook shares to share with his co-founders.
After the successful acquisition, he moved in to work with Facebook as a full-time staff.
This transaction happened in 2014.
And by 2016, with enough liquid cash, he donated $10,000 in support of a pro-Trump election campaign group.
That decision didn’t go down well with so many investors and the team at Facebook. This made Mark to fire the Oculus co-founder, Palmer Luckey in 2017.
3 months after leaving Facebook and Oculus VR — the company he birthed, he started Anduril Industries.
Anduril Industries is a military technology company focused on autonomous drones and sensors for military applications.
This is similar to what Terra Industries is doing in Nigeria. Terra Industries is a billion-dollar company in the making.
Today, that single forced decision to leave Facebook and the company, Oculus VR he co-founded has made him $5.1 billion rich.
He’s now a major U.S. Army contractor.
Is there something you can learn from this?
A lot.
I will share just 3:
1 — Start early
Whatever you want to do with your life, start early. Apply pressure on yourself.
If all you have is your marketing skill, apply pressure so that you can accomplish more in a short time.
At the age of 17, Palmer Luckey has already started building things. He completed his first major prototype PR1 at 17. It had a 90 degree field of view, low latency and built-in haptic feedback. And by 20, he built a $2 billion brand.
2 — Your political affiliation can affect your business outcome
I h a t e to admit this but the truth remains that your political affiliation will affect your business in one way or the other.
If you are not ready for the outcome, avoid politics. Palmer Luckey lost his place in Facebook now Meta because Mark and his investors were backing Hillary Clinton.
And if you are in a 3rd world country, the impact is even more dangerous.
If you desire to go into politics in the future, start building businesses that the government in power can’t destroy at the snap of the finger. All your investments shouldn’t be in one country.
Diversify across industries and territories. Build some with multiple investors. The fear of touching others will make them leave you alone.
Learn from what Alhaji Aliko Dangote is doing. He’s diversifying across territories. In 20 years time, no single country can hold him down.
3 — That challenge is not the end of the road
From Oculus VR to Anduril Industries. If he didn’t leave Facebook, his impact in military technology wouldn’t have seen the light of the day.
When you are faced with a pressing challenge, step back and ask yourself: “What can I learn from this experience?”
A closed door might just be pointing you to another open door.
Some people are so stubborn to understand and recognize their new season. If God doesn’t close their current door, they will never see the bigger open door staring at them.
I hope you’ve learned something from this.
