๐ต Circle wins federal bank charter as lenders warn of $500B deposit drain
Circle received final approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) on July 10 to operate a national trust bank under federal supervision โ making it one of the first major stablecoin issuers to gain this status.
Circle described the approval as a major step for USDC, its dollar-pegged stablecoin. The charter places Circle under direct federal oversight, giving USDC a more formal position within the US financial system.
Traditional lenders are raising alarms: stablecoins are projected to drain up to $500 billion in deposits from banks as users shift holdings into regulated digital dollar alternatives. The concern reflects broader anxiety in the banking sector as stablecoin issuers gain legitimacy and institutional access previously reserved for chartered financial institutions.
