ETERNAL RELEVANCE
Text: “Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life….” John 6:27 KJV
I want to begin by saying that the phrase “Labour not for the meat which perisheth…” does not suggest that you fold your hands and do nothing waiting for food to drop from heaven. Manna has stopped falling. Now if you don’t work you will beg to eat. The NLT gives us a broader understanding: “…Don’t be so concerned about perishable things….” The lesson here is helping us to understand what should be the greatest or the highest priority of our lives. We can be so engrossed with mundane things that we lose sight of what really matters in life. We need perishable things for daily sustenance but don’t live for them. We live for something higher and greater. Perishable things also mean things of lesser value and limited capacity to produce inner satisfaction. A flamboyant life does not necessarily suggest inner peace and satisfaction. Some of the most dressed people are the most miserable people internally. It’s a major challenge in life if you spend all your years, emotional energy and physical strength on things that will still leave you empty and unsatisfied.
If we go back to our opening verse you will see another mind-blowing insight. It says “….But for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life….” Here Jesus suggested what we should labour for. “…Meat which endureth…” Spend your life pursuing things that are of eternal relevance. Invest your time, energy and resources on things that have eternal value. One of the greatest foolishness in life is to spend your whole life pursuing what will perish at the expense of what will endure forever. When eternal relevance becomes your goal in life it will change everything about you.
PRAYER:
Thank you Lord because my life is becoming eternally focused on what is important and not mundane.
