Tinubu Signs Executive Order Harmonising Virtual Asset Regulation Worldwide

President Bola Tinubu has signed the Presidential Executive Order on Virtual Assets Coordination, 2026, to harmonise the regulation of virtual assets in Nigeria. Signed under Section 5 of the 1999 Constitution, it takes effect immediately, aiming to strengthen cooperation among financial and revenue agencies and protect citizens from fraud.

The presidency said the Order responds to a fragmented regulatory system where overlapping agency mandates left gaps exploited by unregistered operators, exposing Nigerians to fraud and money laundering risks. The framework closes these gaps through coordination, without creating new regulators or displacing existing mandates.
