OPEN HEAVENS DEVOTIONAL 17 JULY 2026 COMMENTARY
MEMORISE: John 2:1-11
This passage records Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding in Cana of Galilee. The hosts ran out of wine—a social disaster of immense proportions. Jesus turned water into wine, manifesting His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

BIBLE READING: Psalm 46:2
“Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.”

This verse declares unshakable confidence in God despite catastrophic circumstances.

Satan’s Attack on Marriage
“Today, I will discuss marital burdens as another category of burdens. Satan hates everything God has created, including the institution of marriage. This is why he always tries to disrupt the holy matrimony between a man and a woman.”

Why Satan Hates Marriage What Marriage Represents
It reflects Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:32) A picture of divine love and covenant
It produces godly offspring (Malachi 2:15) The next generation of worshippers
It provides companionship and rest (Genesis 2:18) A refuge from the world’s loneliness
It is ordained by God Satan opposes everything God blesses
“Sometimes, he focuses on keeping a man and a woman from ever getting married, and at other times, he visits a husband and his wife with different problems that will keep them from enjoying peace and rest in their home.”

Satan’s Tactics Against Marriage How They Manifest
Preventing marriage altogether Delayed marriage, wrong partners, fear of commitment
Disrupting existing marriages Conflict, infidelity, communication breakdown
Stealing marital joy Barrenness, financial stress, interference from in-laws
Destroying peace Constant fighting, emotional withdrawal, abuse
If you are experiencing any of these, recognize the source. Satan is the enemy of your marriage. But greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.

The Wedding at Cana: From Shame to Glory
“Today’s Bible reading tells us about a wedding in Cana of Galilee. The bridegroom must have thought that everything that was needed for the wedding had been provided. However, they suddenly ran out of wine. I am sure that they felt ashamed until the Almighty God intervened.”

The Couple’s Expectation Their Reality
Everything was planned They ran out of wine
They thought they had provided enough A sudden, unexpected shortage
Joy and celebration Potential shame and disgrace
Running out of wine in that culture was not a minor inconvenience. It was a social catastrophe. The bridegroom could have been sued. The family’s reputation would be ruined. What was meant to be a day of joy became a moment of crisis.

“Jesus turned water into wine. He did not mock their lack. He did not shame them for running out. He quietly provided—and not just any wine, but the best wine.”

What Jesus Did What It Means for You
He was invited into the situation Invite Jesus into your marriage
He saw the need before it was announced He knows your burden before you speak
He provided abundantly (six waterpots, 20-30 gallons each) He is not a God of barely enough, but of overflow
He turned water into wine He can transform your situation
The same Jesus who saved that wedding can save your marriage. He can turn the water of your struggles into the wine of joy. He can replace shame with glory.

Hannah: From Barrenness to Motherhood
“1 Samuel 1:1-20 tells us the story of Hannah, who was barren. Her adversary mocked her daily, and as a result, her life became unbearable. She didn’t plan to be barren, but barrenness came nonetheless, and there was nothing she could do about it.”

Hannah’s Burden The Source of Her Pain
Barrenness (could not conceive) Physical inability

Year after year, no child Prolonged suffering
Even her husband’s love could not comfort her Deep, soul-level anguish
“The Burden Bearer stepped into her situation, however, and she gave birth to six children, among whom was the renowned prophet, Samuel.”

Hannah’s Response God’s Response
She wept bitterly God saw her tears
She prayed in anguish God heard her prayer
She made a vow (give the child back to God) God honored her sacrifice
She left her burden at the altar God gave her Samuel, then five more children
1 Samuel 1:10-11 – “And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore. And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life…”

Hannah did not suffer in silence. She took her marital burden to the Burden Bearer. And God not only gave her Samuel—He gave her five more children. What the enemy meant for perpetual shame became a testimony of supernatural fruitfulness.
