๐จ BREAKING: Falana Moves to Sue FG Over Luxury Houses for Judges, Calls Policy 'Illegal and Discriminatory'
Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has threatened to take the Federal Government to court over the allocation of newly built luxury houses to judges in Abuja's Katampe District.
Falana described the move as discriminatory, illegal, and contrary to the constitutional principle of equality before the law. According to him, while judges deserve decent and secure accommodation, the government cannot lawfully provide exclusive benefits to one category of public servants while neglecting others.
He questioned the legal basis for the housing allocation, saying:
"Under what law are we operating? It is discriminatory and illegal. You must treat us equally in our country."
Falana stressed that professors, teachers, civil servants, and other public workers also deserve adequate welfare and housing. He argued that government policies should promote fairness instead of creating special privileges for a select group of officials.
The senior lawyer also criticized the continued housing and financial benefits enjoyed by some former governors who are now lawmakers, while many career civil servants retire without similar support.
He warned that the matter would soon be tested in court, insisting that "what is good for the goose is good for the gander."
The controversy follows the Federal Government's handover of newly completed judges' residences in Katampe, Abuja, a project championed by the FCT Administration to improve judges' welfare and security. While supporters say the project strengthens judicial independence, critics argue it raises concerns about equality and public spending priorities.
๐ Do you agree with Falana? Should the government provide similar housing benefits to all public servants, or should judges receive special treatment because of the nature of their job?
