Inspiring Mathematicians 40: Mohammed ibn Mohammed al-Fulani al-Kishnawi

Mohammed ibn Mohammed al-Fulani al-Kishnawi (c. 1714–c. 1741) was a distinguished Fulani mathematician, astronomer, and Islamic scholar from al-Kishnawa near Katsina, in present-day Nigeria.

Renowned for his expertise in mathematical astronomy, he later studied and taught in Cairo at Al-Azhar, where his scholarship earned wide recognition across the Islamic world.

Writing in Arabic, al-Kishnawi produced influential works on arithmetic, astronomy, and astronomical calculations, combining careful mathematical reasoning with practical applications such as timekeeping, navigation, and determining the Islamic calendar.

His career exemplifies the rich scientific traditions of eighteenth-century West Africa and highlights the important contributions of African scholars to the global history of mathematics and astronomy.
