Abia State is set to take another major step in its industrial and renewable
energy drive as Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, welcomed a consortium of investors proposing to establish a $145 million solar manufacturing plant at Umuelele, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
Receiving the delegation led by Dr. Oko Jaja, the Governor expressed satisfaction that the project has progressed to the Final Investment Decision (FID) stage, describing it as another indication that investors now have confidence in Abia's business environment. He assured the team that his administration would continue to provide every legitimate support required to ensure the successful delivery of the investment, noting that the State remains committed to making business easier for genuine investors.
Governor Otti said investments of this nature go far beyond the capital involved, pointing out that they create jobs, expand the State's economy and improve the quality of life of the people. He explained that the government had already taken the necessary steps to make the project possible, including making land available, while assuring the investors that any additional support needed from the State Government would receive prompt attention. According to him, attracting productive private investments remains central to his administration's economic agenda because they stimulate industrial growth and create lasting opportunities for Abians.
Earlier, Dr. Oko Jaja informed the Governor that the project, being executed in partnership with Chinese investors, has secured a commitment of about $145 million, with the first tranche of funding expected by September 2026. Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of MD NWAKANMA NIGERIA Limited, Mr. Dennis Madu Nwakamma, disclosed that the factory would be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement with the Abia State Government. He explained that the company's Chinese technical partners had already inspected the proposed site and that construction is expected to commence before the end of September.
Aside manufacturing solar panels and related components, Mr Nwakamma said the project would equip Abia youths with valuable technical skills, while selected trainees would receive advanced training in China to prepare them for careers in solar manufacturing.
Present at the meeting were the Commissioner for Lands, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije, Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday,the Director General of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) office and other senior government officials.
