Male hippos don't rely on songs, bright colors, or elaborate dances to impress females.

Instead, they perform one of the animal kingdom's strangest courtship displays by defecating and urinating at the same time while rapidly wagging their flattened tail.

The spinning tail works like a fan, flinging the mixture over a wide area. The spray often lands on nearby vegetation, the ground, and sometimes directly on the female they are trying to court.

This isn't random behavior. The dung contains powerful scent chemicals that advertise the male's identity, health, reproductive condition, and dominance. Females use these chemical signals to assess potential mates, while rival males recognize them as territorial warnings.

Male hippos also use this "dung shower" to mark the boundaries of their territory, especially in rivers and lakes where multiple males compete for breeding rights.
