Mary Habila’s death: Colleague gives fresh account of events before Nurse was found dead

Fresh details have emerged over the death of Mary Habila, a nurse with the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences (DUFUS) who was on secondment to the Federal Ministry of Works, following a sworn affidavit by her colleague and close friend, Anita Baaki.

Baaki, a physiotherapist from Benue State, narrated the events leading to Habila’s death in an affidavit filed before the Ebonyi State High Court, saying they were among officials who travelled from Abuja to Ebonyi State on June 24 for official assignments under the Minister of Works, David Umahi.Executive Branch

According to the affidavit, members of the delegation were accommodated in separate but adjoining rooms at a staff chalet located within the minister’s country home in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

She clarified that the facility served as accommodation for staff members and associates and was not the minister’s personal residence.

Recounting the last moments she shared with Habila, Baaki said the deceased returned to the chalet on the evening of June 26 after visiting a salon and stopped by her room to show off her new hairstyle.

The two chatted briefly before Habila retired to her room.

“Mary told me she was tired and wanted to take a shower before sleeping. That was the last time I saw her alive,” Baaki stated in the affidavit.

She said concern arose the following morning when Habila failed to leave her room as she normally would. After several phone calls went unanswered, Baaki said she knocked on the door but received no response.

Finding the room locked from the inside, she alerted a domestic staff member to search the surrounding premises.

When efforts to locate Habila elsewhere proved unsuccessful, other members of the team were informed and the room was forced open.

According to the affidavit, Habila was found lying unconscious on the floor close to the entrance of the room.

She was rushed to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, where doctors later confirmed that she was dead on arrival.
