🏆 GOLDEN BOOT RACE HEATS UP AS MESSI EDGES AHEAD OF MBAPPÉ

The race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot has taken another dramatic twist, and Lionel Messi is now in pole position.

Although the Argentine captain didn’t find the back of the net in the semi-final victory over England, he produced another masterclass by providing two crucial assists. Those assists have now become just as valuable as goals in the race for the tournament’s highest individual scoring honour.

Both Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé are currently tied on eight goals, but FIFA uses assists as the first tiebreaker when players finish level on goals. That gives Messi the edge, with four assists compared to Mbappé’s three.

With one match remaining, everything is still to play for.

France will meet England in the third-place play-off, giving Mbappé another chance to reclaim top spot. Messi, meanwhile, has the biggest stage of all—the World Cup final against Spain—where another goal or assist could seal both the trophy and the Golden Boot.

The race isn’t over yet. Players like Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Ousmane Dembélé and Mikel Oyarzabal still have an outside chance if they produce something extraordinary in their final matches. Erling Haaland, on the other hand, has completed his campaign with seven goals.
