The United States has urged Nigeria to intensify efforts to protect Christian communities from attacks and commit greater resources to ensuring the safe and sustainable return of millions of internally displaced persons. During a high-level visit to Abuja, US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia held talks with senior Nigerian officials on security cooperation, religious freedom, counterterrorism, justice sector reforms, digital innovation and regional stability.

While acknowledging progress under the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group, Washington said more must be done to safeguard vulnerable communities and address the country’s displacement crisis. The discussions come ahead of an August meeting in Washington, DC, where both countries will review Nigeria’s progress on security, terrorism prosecutions and concerns linked to its designation as a Country of Particular Concern.
