Johann Bernoulli (1667–1748) was a Swiss mathematician and one of the leading figures in the development of calculus after Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.

A younger brother of Jacob Bernoulli, he made fundamental contributions to differential equations, infinite series, and mathematical analysis, helping to refine and extend Leibniz's calculus through his research and teaching.

Johann is best known for solving the famous brachistochrone problem, which laid the groundwork for the calculus of variations, and for the Bernoulli differential equation, a class of equations that remains important in mathematics, physics, and engineering.

As a gifted teacher, he mentored some of the greatest mathematicians of the eighteenth century, including Leonhard Euler, ensuring that his ideas profoundly influenced the future development of mathematics.
