Abbas: State police without dedicated funding could be a threat to citizens

Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house of representatives, says a dedicated fund should be established for state police to ensure officers are adequately paid.

The country is on the verge of establishing state police to address rising security challenges nationwide.

Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja at the national security roundtable of the 2026 national assembly open week, Abbas said failure to properly fund state police could turn officers into a threat to the citizens they are expected to protect.
