Any society that fails to sanitise its public space cannot function as it should. In the UK, when a leader is accused of wrongdoing or corruption, the expectation of decency and accountability is so strong that resignation often follows within 24 hours. That culture of responsibility helps institutions stay stable and credible.
Nigeria’s situation is different. Greed, the obsession with power, and weak institutional checks mean many leaders hold onto office even when serious allegations arise. Instead of stepping aside to allow proper investigation, they cling to authority, and the system absorbs the damage. The result is a political environment where misconduct becomes normalised and public trust eroded
