Governor Seyi Makinde's
called for an independent international investigation by the United Nations and human rights groups into the abduction of school and their teachers in the Oriire Local Government Area, insisting that only a transparent probe could uncover the full circumstances surrounding the attack and help prevent similar incidents across Nigeria. The Oyo State House of Assembly backed this call. However, the Nigeria’s Senate under Senate President Godswill Akpabio has cautioned Gov. Makinde against calling for the UN for a transparent investigation with Senator Adams Oshiomhole leading the criticism and describing the governor’s statement as “unstatesmanly,” politically motivated, and downplaying the efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and Nigerian security forces. The Senate under a resolution, urged Makinde to withdraw or avoid statements that could undermine national security efforts, emphasizing that Nigeria is a sovereign nation capable of handling its internal matters domestically.

This has sparked political debate, with the Presidency and Oyo APC also criticizing Makinde’s call as politicizing the issue. Supporters of the governor argue it highlights the need for deeper accountability amid recurring insecurity.
