A "Judas goat" is a specially trained goat used to lead sheep or cattle because goats are naturally confident and animals tend to follow them without hesitation.

The name comes from Judas Iscariot, symbolizing betrayal, because the goat repeatedly leads other animals toward slaughter while remaining unharmed itself.

At many slaughterhouses, the goat guides nervous livestock through chutes and loading areas more calmly than human handlers can.

Once the herd reaches the final gate, the goat is separated and returns to repeat the process.

The practice reduces stress and panic among livestock, making animals easier to handle and lowering the risk of injuries to both the animals and workers.
