During the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, Australian rower Henry Pearce was powering through his quarterfinal in the single sculls when something extraordinary happened.
A mother duck and her tiny ducklings suddenly swam straight into his lane, directly in his path.
Most athletes would have kept rowing. But not Pearce.
Without hesitation, he stopped rowing, lifted his oars, and calmly waited for the entire duck family to cross safely. By the time he resumed, his opponent had surged into a commanding lead.
Yet Pearce refused to panic. Stroke by stroke, he steadily closed the gap, overtook his rival, and crossed the finish line first.
He went on to win the gold medal in the single sculls but it was his act of compassion in the middle of the race that made him an Olympic legend.
