During a lioness's fertile period, she and a male may mate every 15 to 30 minutes for several days.

That can add up to 20 to 50 or even more mating attempts in a single day, greatly increasing the chances of successful fertilization.

This constant activity is exhausting for both animals.

Male lions often eat very little, lose weight, and spend nearly all their time guarding the female from rival males while continuing to mate.

If the male becomes too slow or stops responding, the lioness may swat, growl at, or even bite his hindquarters or testicles.

This isn't an act of cruelty or punishment. It's a natural behavior driven by powerful reproductive hormones that stimulate the male to continue mating.
