A National Emergency We're Not Talking About Enough

2.2 MILLION Nigerians kidnapped in one year.
Read that again.
New figures from the National Bureau of Statistics just dropped, and they paint a picture so devastating that it should have every Nigerian sitting up in shock. Between May 2023 and April 2024, an estimated 2.2 million of our fellow citizens that's more than the population of Lagos state were taken by force.

Let Those Numbers Sink In
🔴 N2.2 TRILLION in ransom payments
To put this in perspective? That's roughly the ENTIRE proposed federal health budget for 2025. Money that could have built hospitals, paid doctors, saved lives through healthcare instead, it went into the pockets of kidnappers.
🔴 In just the Northwest: N1.2 TRILLION
Families in one region alone paid enough to transform an entire state. Think about that. Grandmothers selling ancestral lands. Parents withdrawing their children's school fees. Workers giving up their life savings.
🔴 Average ransom per family: N2.7 MILLION
That's more than most Nigerians earn in 6 months. For ONE incident.
This Isn't Just a Statistic

Behind every number is a story:
✋ A farmer who watched his fields disappear sold to pay kidnappers while his kidnapped son was still in captivity
✋ A child pulled from the classroom their future literally stolen, their dreams deferred, if they make it back at all
✋ Families torn apart some reunited, many not. Some lost to the bush forever.
✋ Entire communities traumatized afraid to send children to school, afraid to travel, afraid to farm, afraid to live
✋ An economy bleeding out productive citizens lost, businesses closed, investments fleeing, trust eroding
What 65% of Affected Households Told Us
65% of families in the northwest paid ransoms. Not because they wanted to. Because they had no choice. Because the alternative was the unknown the bush, the dark, the silence that comes when a loved one vanishes.
This isn't negotiation. This is extortion at gunpoint.
We're Living Through a Crisis That's Become Normal
When did kidnapping 2.2 million people in a year become something we scroll past?
When did paying trillions in ransom become an accepted part of life?
When did burying our children become a realistic outcome of attending school?
This isn't acceptable. This is CATASTROPHIC.

Every ransom paid strengthens the kidnappers. Every payment funds the next abduction. Every victim that escapes gets replaced by ten more.
Schools are emptying parents keeping children home

The economy is strangling when people are in fear, nothing grows
This Requires More Than Thoughts and Prayers
We need:
🚨 Accountability Where are the security forces? Why is there zero urgency?
🚨 Strategy These numbers prove we're losing. We need a real plan.
🚨 Resources If trillions are being paid to kidnappers, surely we can invest that in ACTUALLY securing our people
🚨 Transparency These statistics need to be front-page news every single day until something changes
🚨 Action Words are done. We need RESULTS.
This Is Your Country Calling
If you have a daughter, she's at risk. If you have a son, he's at risk. If you farm, you're at risk. If you travel, if you work, if you exist in Nigeria right now, you are living under the shadow of this crisis.
2.2 million kidnapped. N2.2 trillion paid. Millions of lives changed forever.
This is not normal. This is not acceptable. This is a national emergency.
And we need to act like it.
