Public office demands a higher standard of character.

I wonder how a sitting minister was able to remain so comfortably seated on his public seat in such circumstances. All he could do was to give a very flimsy narrative that is totally not true.
Whenever disturbing reports emerge involving those entrusted with public office, they remind us of an important principle: leadership is not only about competence; it is also about character.

Whether someone serves as a minister, governor, legislator, or any other public official, they occupy a position of public trust. Their conduct, both in public and in private, can have a direct impact on the credibility of the institutions they represent.

If allegations of wrongdoing arise, they deserve to be investigated thoroughly, independently, and without interference. At the same time, we must resist the temptation to pronounce guilt before the facts are established. Justice requires both accountability and fairness.

Beyond the legal questions, however, there is a moral one. Public office comes with responsibility. Citizens expect those who hold high office to exercise sound judgment, uphold ethical values, and avoid situations that bring the office into disrepute.

Leadership is a privilege, not an entitlement. The higher the office, the higher the standard. Public officials should not only obey the law but also live in a manner that inspires confidence in those they serve.

Nigeria needs leaders whose private conduct does not undermine their public responsibilities. Character may not be the only qualification for leadership, but without it, leadership eventually loses its moral authority.

As citizens, we should demand due process, accountability, and integrity in equal measure. That is how strong institutions are built, and that is how public trust is sustained.

Dave Umahi must step aside as a minister of the federal republic and be arrested by the police for investigation as the prime suspect in the mysterious death of Mary Habila.
