One of Africa’s most social woodland birds, Green Woodhoopoes (Phoeniculus purpureus) live in cooperative family groups, with older offspring often helping their parents raise the next brood—a behaviour known as cooperative breeding.

Rather than feeding on the ground, they climb and clamber over tree trunks and branches, using their long, curved bills to probe bark crevices for insects, spiders, and other invertebrates.
