Nigeria's Flood Season Is Back. And So Is Our Amnesia.

Every rainy season: floods kill hundreds, displace thousands, destroy billions in property.

Every dry season: we forget. Politicians forget. The headlines forget. Nothing changes.

Then the rains return. And we act shocked.

Economists now call this what it is: a permanent structural drag on Africa's biggest economy. Not a natural disaster. A policy failure that repeats on schedule.

We lose 4–6 billion annually. For context: that's more than enough to fix our drainage, build early warning systems, and insure our farmers. Instead, we rebuild mud houses in the same floodplains and call it resilience.

Bangladesh poorer, flatter, more flood-prone cut flood deaths by 90%. The difference? They prepared. We perform.

The water isn't the enemy. Our institutional amnesia is.

The floods will come again. The only question is: will we finally be ready?
