"You don't applaud a fish for swimming or a bird for flying."
We've heard it countless times.
People say the bare minimum is not an achievement. They argue that doing what you're expected to do deserves no applause—that celebration should be reserved only for those who go above and beyond.
But here's the question:
If everyone consistently did the bare minimum, would we still need so many "extraordinary" people to fix what others neglected?
If every parent simply raised their children responsibly... If every public servant simply served with integrity... If every driver simply obeyed traffic rules... If every citizen simply played their part...
Wouldn't our communities, our nation, and our world be dramatically better?
The uncomfortable truth is this:
We glorify extraordinary people because ordinary responsibility has become rare.
The world doesn't suffer because there are too few heroes. It suffers because too many people refuse to do even the minimum expected of them.
So maybe it's time to stop mocking the bare minimum.
After all, an extraordinary society is built when ordinary people consistently fulfill their ordinary responsibilities.
