The ECOWAS Parliament has called on governments across West Africa to urgently expand decent and sustainable employment opportunities for young people, warning that rising unemployment, poverty and limited economic prospects remain the biggest drivers of irregular migration. Following a week-long engagement in The Gambia, lawmakers found that many youths see migration as their only path to a better future, despite the risks of exploitation, abuse and human trafficking.

The regional legislature urged governments to invest in vocational training, entrepreneurship, agriculture and access to finance, while strengthening reintegration programmes for returnees through skills development and psychosocial support. It also recommended sustained citizen engagement to ensure migration policies reflect the realities facing young people across the region.
