President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka on his 92nd birthday, describing the literary icon as “a gift we will always treasure.” In a statement marking the occasion, Tinubu praised Soyinka’s enduring contributions to literature, democracy and good governance, highlighting his courage in confronting injustice and his lifelong commitment to the Nigerian project.
The President also reflected on Soyinka’s historic achievement as the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986 and recalled their shared role in the struggle against military rule and the June 12 democratic movement. Describing Soyinka as one of Nigeria’s greatest living intellectuals and a repository of history, knowledge and courage, Tinubu wished the celebrated playwright many more years in good health.
